The Blazers Ski Club, Inc. was founded in 1978 by Mr. Richard Adkins, Jr. The Club actually got its beginning from a spin off of a sports car club. Richard was first introduced to skiing by a friend, Mr. Sam Lecoin who started skiing in Germany in 1964. After reading an article in Essence Magazine on skiing and the National Brotherhood of Skiers, Richard contacted Ms. Marian Webber, Vice President of the Eastern Region NBS. Ms. Webber gave the requirement information describing how groups join the NBS. The members at this time consisted of Car Club members: Sam Lecoin, Guy Cuffey, Howard Lawson, Herman Card, Jr., Londel Hay and Richard Adkins, Jr. were charter members and Richard submitted "The Blazers" as the Club's official name. The first ski club meeting was held on October 19, 1978 with the car club members. The second meeting was held on January 17,1979 as the "Blazers Ski Club" and brought into the Club Deborah Kenney, Lou Thompson, James Kelly and Noel Hawkins. Today, the Blazers have a membership of 200, including our Junior Blazers comprised of children from age four to age seventeen. The Blazers were accepted into the Eastern Region of the National Brotherhood of Skiers on January 27, 1979at the Eastern Region Winteriest held at Mt. Snow VT. The Blazers became a charter member of the National Brotherhood of Skiers at the first Summit held on March 26, 1979 at Sun Valley, Idaho. On April 27, 1979, the Blazers elected Lou Thompson as its first president. The presidents who have succeeded Mr. Thompson in the order of election were: Darlene Barnett, Eugene Richardson, Harold Comfort, Alice Swann, Tracey Joell, Ted Hawkins, Jaqui Green, Michael Washington, Courtland Gee, Lisa Higgs Dutton and current president Gail D. Montgomery Watson. The progress of the Blazers Ski Club is attributed to the energetic leadership of its elected officers, past and present, who have displayed innovative and imaginative planning in the growth of this organization. |
